Background

Birkett Reserve is a Local park located on the corner of Birkett St and Clement St in Bedford. The play equipment has reached the end of its useful life and will be replaced in the coming months.

How will the play space be redeveloped?

This project will include new playground equipment, sand and rubber soft fall inside a block wall edge. The shade shades have been replaced and the posts will be repainted. The reserve will also undergo various landscaping upgrades such as new mulched native planting and trees, as well as new seating, a picnic table and improved irrigation.

Due to increased occurrences of anti-social behavior ad vandalism, the project was put on hold for 12 months while the City, led by the Rangers and Security team, worked towards ensuring the safety of the community and prevention of ongoing issues. The City installed two CCTV cameras inside the reserve facing the play equipment to monitor the park and are confident that the project can now safely and successfully recommence. Due to this delay, the budget and scope for the works has reduced slightly. The playspace and associated play infrastructure (sand and rubber soft fall, block wall edging) are unchanged and will be implemented as originally intended. The overall design that will be delivered can be found here.

The engagement period is now closed, we would like to thank all participants for providing feedback via the engage page and survey. Considering the feedback received, the City of Bayswater selected Concept Plan A (image below) as the chosen playground to be installed at Birkett Reserve, final renders of the design can be found here.

As seen from the table below, a majority of respondents voted on Concept Plan A as the preferred design at Birkett Reserve. We also had a number of positive comments on the design and are looking forward to delivering this to the community.

Project Status

Temporary fencing has been installed around the existing play space and works are commencing throughout the reserve.

The play space is currently closed until construction is completed. We would encourage the community to visit nearby play spaces at Alan Lehmann & R.A. Cook reserves.

What's next?

The playspace is expected to be back open to the public by May 2024.
