How did this project come about?

The City's Skate and Bike Development Advisory Committee (SABDAC) made a recommendation to council to develop a Skate and BMX Strategy.

In March 2022, Council resolved in part to consider $35,000 in the 2022-23 budget to develop a Citywide Skate and BMX Facility Strategy.

    Who are Otium Planning Group?

Otium Planning Group is the independent community, sporting and leisure consultancy appointed to undertake the engagement and development of the Skate and BMX Strategy.

Is the City planning to deliver new facilities?

Separate to this strategy, The City has been liaising with Metronet and Tonkin Gap Alliance as they have plans for the following new facilities within the City of Bayswater.

Coode Street Pocket Park - Metronet as part of the Bayswater Train Station redevelopment, are upgrading Coode Street Reserve to incorporate a community activated space with a focus toward youth recreation.

Under the Redcliffe Bridge Activation - Tonkin Gap Alliance as part of their project works, are activating an area under Redcliffe Bridge, on the northern side, as a community space.

Items agreed to be included in the public space are as follows:

    • Revegetation of both the park and wetlands areas
    • Aboriginal artwork
    • Yarning circle
    • Mountain bike skills area
    • Pump track
    • Sandy beach area for canoe and kayak access

Construction is scheduled to commence mid- 2023.

The development of any new facilities in the future will depend on community needs and feedback.

What is the purpose of the Skate and BMX Strategy?

To determine the need for additional facilities or skate / BMX infrastructure - which is currently provided for within the City of Bayswater at Wotton Reserve and Crimea Reserve skate parks, and the informal BMX circuit located at Lighting Park Recreation Centre in Noranda.

Moving forward, should a need be determined for new or enhanced facilities, these would by designed for a specific purpose such as those at Crimea Reserve, or could be smaller skate elements incorporated into a path at a local park.

    Who are we engaging with?

The Skate and BMX Strategy will be a City-wide plan for sports such as skating, scootering, BMX. We want to hear from anyone with an interest in these activities or living near an existing facility.

As part of our process, we are also engaging other key stakeholders including SABDAC, interested schools, relevant State Sporting Associations and industry specialists.

What are the stages of engagement and how can I be involved?

Stage One: In April-May 2023, our public consultation period opened. We invite community to provide feedback via a survey located on this page.

Stage Two: In June, we will run three workshops to validate the results of the survey and to seek additional information in regards to Skate and BMX.

The third engagement session will be held to validate the results of the survey, explore key themes identified, and to seek additional information in regards to Skate and BMX.

Stage Three: A draft Skate & BMX Strategy will be developed based on feedback from the survey, workshops and drop-in session, coupled with research and data collected on the topic. The draft Strategy will be advertised for public comment in the second half of 2023.

Following each engagement stage, community feedback will be collated into a summary document and posted here on the Bayswater engagement page.
