Background

The City currently does not have a register of names and has limited options available for consideration when a naming request is submitted. At the May 2023 Ordinary Council Meeting Council resolved that the City invite the public to submit name options for the future naming of parks, reserves, streets, right-of-ways and other infrastructure across the City.

City officers will then review options for names submitted by the community against the City's naming policy. Council will consider the final list of names.

Any final name must be approved by Landgate, which will take place at the time, and part of the process of the specific naming request.

Types of Names

All names submitted must fall under one of the below categories:

  1. Noongar Language relevant to the area;
  2. Bayswater identities, including persons with historical connections to the City of Bayswater and proven association with the area. Suggestions are restricted to persons no longer living. This can include:
    • persons who have made a significant contribution to the area; and/or
    • persons who have made a significant contribution to the Bayswater community.
  3. Prominent historic Bayswater businesses, where the business has historical association with the area, is proven to have existed over a substantial period of time and is held in strong regard by the community;
  4. Flora and fauna native to the area;
  5. A culturally significant historic event, architectural style, artwork, waterway or other culturally iconic element connected with the area.

Please refer to the attached City of Bayswater Naming of Parks, Reserves, Streets and Infrastructure Policy, or view the Naming Categories and FAQs for further information regarding name requirements.

Landgate Geographic Naming Policy

All proposed names are expected to comply with its Policies and Standards for Geographic Naming in WA and, if applicable, its Guideline for Aboriginal Naming. Of note is the requirement that a name is not reproduced within 10km of a street etc. with the same name. Please refer to the FAQs for further information regarding name requirements. Once completed, the City may choose an appropriate name from the register when they receive a name request, which will then be sent to Landgate for final approval.

Submission requirements

You are required to provide information supporting your submission, including how the name meets the naming criteria (above). To ensure the information can be verified, please include any photographs, newspaper articles and/or historical records with your submission. If you have trouble with providing a digital or scan copy of originals, please visit one of the City's three libraries and library staff will be able to assist you.

Note: Submissions with no supporting information will be considered as non-compliant and not be assessed by the City. Names submitted will be considered for the name register only, and at this point in time not for a specific laneway, road, park, reserve or infrastructure.
