What was being proposed?
The proposal was for a new suburb to be created surrounding Meltham Train Station called 'Meltham'. The suburb would have primarily included land currently located in the 'Bayswater' suburb, however small parts of the suburbs of 'Maylands' and 'Bedford' were also proposed to be included.
What is the purpose of the proposal?
As part of community engagement undertaken for the 'Meltham Surrounds' project, some members of the community felt that the area around Meltham Train Station lacked its own identity and recognition as a place. As a result the City is engaging with the community to see if they would like a new suburb named 'Meltham' to provide the area with a greater sense of identity and place.
Current project status:
Council resolved to not support the new suburb at their Ordinary Council Meeting dated 26 May 2020 to approve the scheme amendment - Item 10.4.1:
