Maylands Lakes

DECEMBER 2025 UPDATE - LANDSCAPE AND GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE ASSESSMENT & DESIGN RESPONSE

Planning and design are now underway for key restoration works, including improving water circulation at Lake Brearley and the detailed design of a treatment wetland at Brickworks Lake.

While these works seek to address environmental issues, the Landscape and Green Infrastructure Assessment takes a broader view, looking at how the lakes, vegetation, pathways and open spaces could be enhanced to benefit both the environment and community.

The primary purpose of this assessment is to provide a clear understanding of current conditions and to communicate why ecological and landscape changes are necessary to address ongoing issues such as algal blooms and midge.

This framework is intended to inform the design of a future landscape restoration masterplan, ensuring interventions are evidence-based, balanced and sensitive to ecological and community values.

The survey below provides an opportunity for you to respond to each of the designated 15 areas of the assessment. Please note that submissions close 5 January 2026 5pm.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION MASTERPLAN

The City of Bayswater is committed to improving the water quality at Maylands Lakes.

In April 2024, Council endorsed the preparation of a Maylands Lakes Environmental Restoration Masterplan to develop a solution to improve water quality, reduce midge and algal blooms, and enhance amenity and access to nature in the area. The Masterplan was endorsed by Council in April 2025, and an estimated implementation timeline presented to the community. Click here to find out more about the Masterplan.

  • Council backs new plan for Maylands Lakes

At its meeting last night, Council voted unanimously to endorse the Maylands Lakes Environmental Restoration Concept Report and commence works identified in Phase 1.

Council has approved setting aside $2.4 million in its draft 2025/26 Budget towards the project.

Mayor Filomena Piffaretti said adopting the plan represented a significant milestone in addressing water quality and midge challenges experienced by the community at Maylands Lakes.

“I’m confident this plan will deliver a solution to a complex problem that has been impacting the lives of our residents for many years,” she said.

“This plan represents 12 months of working together with expert consultants, our Scientific Advisory Panel and our community on a data-driven approach.

“We’ve listened to our community through forums and workshops, and this has informed development of the plan alongside advice from environmental scientists, academics and state agency representatives.

“The City is fully funding the design and implementation of the first phase of works, so our community can be confident this plan will be put into action.”

Phase 1 works include establishing a pumping system to recirculate water at Lake Brearley and developing a wetland at Brickworks Lake to filter and treat water entering the lakes. Phase 1 works are expected to take approximately 18 months to two years.

The City will continue to advocate for external funding for actions identified in Phases 2 and 3.

A community engagement outcomes report has also been published.

For more information, visit the Maylands Lakes Environmental Restoration Masterplan project page.

  • Midge treatment

In recent weeks, rainfall and warmer temperatures have provided optimal conditions for midge breeding within Maylands Lakes.

This week, the City treated Lake Brearley and Lake Bungana with a higher dosage of larvicide, as per our Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority off-label permit.

It is expected this will assist in addressing a recent increase in midge numbers, however there may be some fluctuation over the coming weeks as a result of further rainfall.

The City continues to undertake treatments and raking on a 14-day cycle.

  • Tree planting on islands

The City has completed planting trees on the islands within Lake Bungana and Lake Brearley. Three different endemic species have been planted across the five islands, including Eucalyptus rudis, Melaleuca rhaphiophylla and Casuarina obesa.

  • Masterplan Workshop update

A reminder community members are invited to provide their feedback on the Maylands Lakes Concept Design Report before 11pm this Sunday 16 March 2025.

The City’s consultants are seeking to understand the community’s acceptance of the range of proposed intervention methods contained within the report to address the issues at Maylands Lakes.

Provide your feedback by clicking visiting the Maylands Lakes Concepts Feedback Form on the Masterplan project page.

Q&As from the Maylands Lakes Masterplan Workshop on Wednesday 26 February are now available below and on the Masterplan project page.

The consideration of pumps and filtration to alleviate the issues at Maylands Lakes will now be considered at the Ordinary Council Meeting of Tuesday 29 April 2025 along with the draft Masterplan.

  • Masterplan Workshop survey open

Thank you to those who attended the Maylands Lakes Masterplan Workshop on Wednesday 26 February 2025 at The RISE.

Community members heard from consultants Alluvium, and Josh Byrne and Associates, and provided feedback on a concept design report that was developed.

An online feedback form is now available for those who could not attend the workshop.

For more information, visit the Maylands Lakes Environmental Restoration Masterplan project page on Engage Bayswater.

  • Irrigation works on islands

The City is installing irrigation on the islands at Lake Brearley and Lake Bungana. Following this, 14 trees will be planted across the islands, including endemic fringe wetland species Eucalyptus rudis, Melaleuca rhaphiophylla and Casuarina obesa.

  • Masterplan Workshop reminder

A reminder the Maylands Lakes Masterplan Workshop will take place on Wednesday 26 February. This workshop will be hosted by Alluvium, on behalf of the City, and facilitated by Joel Levin from Aha! Consulting.

For more information or to RSVP, visit the Maylands Lakes Masterplan project page.

  • Closure of wooden outlook structures

Following a review of assets around Maylands Lakes, the wooden outlook structures at De Havilland View/Kittyhawk View, and Dakota Avenue, have been closed off. Temporary fencing will be installed around both outlooks to ensure public safety. An update will be provided following further assessment.
