Local Road Safety Program
Background
The City has secured funding from Main Roads WA to help fund the design and construction of traffic-calming measures across the City of Bayswater.
It is important that people who live and work in these areas can share their experience in relation to traffic issues in their local neighbourhood. We want to embed this knowledge in the design process, to create traffic plans to address local issues.
The Low Cost Urban Road Safety Program from Main Roads aims to improve safety for local communities. Successful treatments in other metropolitan areas have been installed to reduce speed, number and severity of crashes, and to create safer walking and cycling environments.
There are some road treatments that are better suited to slow traffic in particular conditions. Detailed information on the types of treatments is available here, and may include:
- Mini and traditional roundabouts
- Raised safety platforms
- Traffic calming in road options
- Signs and lines
This program by Main Roads only applies to local roads. It does not fund any measures (treatments) on main roads.
The idea is to make whole neighbourhoods safer, not just single roads. The funding is for a range of small solutions, focussing on many low-cost treatments rather than one large one.
What's Next
The program is being rolled out in phases:
2021 - Phase 1 (Frank Drago and Bayswater Waves Precincts) Complete
22/23 - Phase 2a (Shearn Park, Maylands Central, RA Cook & Weld Square) - Final draft plans presented to Council August 22 2023 - click here to view Council report
22/23 - Phase 2b (Beaufort Park) - Stage 2 of Community Engagement complete. Submissions will be reviewed and a draft plan will be prepared for an upcoming Council Meeting.
2023 - Phase 3a (Shearn Park, Maylands Central, RA Cook & Weld Square) - E3 community engagement
2023/24 - Phase 3b (Beaufort Park, Hillcrest Reserve, Maylands Peninsula, Whatley Crescent Nth) - E2 community engagement
2024 - Phase 4
