Consultation has concluded

Claughton Reserve is located on the river at the end of Katanning St in Bayswater. The reserve is used for launching water craft into the river; it is also the home of the famous ‘turtle toilet’.

The reserve has significant environmental value to the community, providing important habitats for native fauna. The City is committed to the conservation, restoration and preservation of this reserve.

There is a limited amount of Public Open Space in this area of Bayswater, meaning that residents surrounding Claughton Reserve have little choice of parks within walking distance of their house. It is important then, that Claughton Reserve and play space is adequately serviced to meet the needs of local residents, as well as the broader community.

The City has developed a Parks and Play Space Classification Hierarchy to inform and guide play space redevelopments. Claughton is classified as a Regional reserve and is used by both local residents and those with particular interests, such as water craft enthusiasts and environmental volunteers. This project will focus on the play space in particular.

Redevelopment of the play space

The play equipment was due for replacement and we taken the opportunity to redevelop the play space. We have taken the opportunity to find out how the community uses the space and their ideas for improvement. This included play elements, seating, drink fountain and other types of park infrastructure.

The budget for this project is $100,000.

Engagement Update

The City received positive feedback during community engagement regarding the concept design based on a nature based style of play equipment. There have been no changes made.

The design provides:

  • Equipment suitable for children aged between 2 - 12 years
  • Climbing, swinging, sliding and balancing elements
  • Imaginative and creative play through a fairy trail that winds through the trees

What's next?

The final design has been developed and is available to view in the Photo Gallery to the right of the page.

The new play equipment has been installed. The park is open.

Contact us any time on the details provided in 'Who's Listening' at the top of the page.
