Claughton Reserve, Bayswater

Claughton Reserve is located on the river at the end of Katanning St in Bayswater. The reserve is used for launching water craft into the river; it is also the home of the famous ‘turtle toilet’.

The reserve has significant environmental value to the community, providing important habitats for native fauna. The City is committed to the conservation, restoration and preservation of this reserve.

There is a limited amount of Public Open Space in this area of Bayswater, meaning that residents surrounding Claughton Reserve have little choice of parks within walking distance of their house. It is important then, that Claughton Reserve and play space is adequately serviced to meet the needs of local residents, as well as the broader community.

The City has developed a Parks and Play Space Classification Hierarchy to inform and guide play space redevelopments (this can be found in the Document Library to the right of the page). Claughton is classified as a Regional reserve and is used by both local residents and those with particular interests, such as water craft enthusiasts and environmental volunteers. This project will focus on the play space in particular.

Redevelopment of the play space

The play equipment is due for replacement and we are taking the opportunity to redevelop the play space. This means that we would like to know how the community uses the space and their ideas for improvement. This could include play elements, seating, drink fountain and other types of park infrastructure.

The budget for this project is $100,000. The existing play equipment can be seen below:

Additional photos of the reserve and the current play equipment can be viewed in the Photo Gallery to the right of the page. Please note that the location of the existing play equipment can be changed, depending on community feedback and available resources.

All play space redevelopments consider accessibility and inclusion, with part of the budget dedicated to pathways and equipment. The City also aims to shade the play equipment as much as possible. You can find further information in the FAQs.

How can I get involved?

You can view the proposed concept plan by clicking here. Alternatively you can find the plan in the Document Library to the right of this page. Once you have had a look at the draft plan, you can provide feedback by completing the survey below in 'Surveys and Forms'.

What's next?

The feedback period will close on 6 April, 2020. The City will review any feedback received and consider any necessary revisions to the proposed concepts. We will then commence detailed design, procurement and placing orders with suppliers. This process will take longer at some play spaces than others, depending on the level of detail required.

Redevelopments are anticipated to start in July/August this year and we will keep the community updated as the information becomes available.

Contact us any time on the details provided in 'Who's Listening' at the top of the page.
