WHY DOES THE CITY HAVE A TREE PLANTING PROGRAM?

Trees provide many benefits to our community, including:

  • improving air quality
  • greening the urban environment
  • supporting valuable ecosystems that sustain life by providing habitat and food for animals and insects, and
  • effectively reducing the impacts of climate change.

Trees also provide shade and cool our suburbs by releasing water vapour. The shade provided not only reduces the need for air conditioning - subsequently reducing your power bills - it helps increase the longevity of infrastructure such as buildings and roads, and also encourages children and community members to walk to school and other destinations. Parking your car under a tree also helps driving around in summer more bearable.

HOW MANY TREES WILL THE CITY BE PLANTING?

As part of our commitment to increase the City's tree canopy, the City will be planting more than 3,000 trees over the 2024 winter period. This is in addition to trees and shrubs planted in natural areas in association with the City's environmental groups, and plants provided to residents through the Plants to Residents program at Environment House.

HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT TREE PLANTING IN MY LOCAL PARK?

The City is planting trees in a number of parks as part of our annual Tree Planting Program. In late May 2024, we will provide a link to the specific parks that are scheduled to receive new trees.

HOW TO GET IN TOUCH

If you’d like more information or to speak to us about the proposed tree planting, please feel free to contact the City's Park Services team on 9272 0622.
