September 2022 update - Please contact the Sustainability and Environment team on fogo@bayswater.wa.gov.au or 9272 0964

March 2021

Does your group of units, townhouses or villas have enough lime-green lidded bins to go FOGO?

And are the bins you have in good condition?

The City has moved to a Food Organics Garden Organics (FOGO) waste service. You are now able to place food organics and other compostable items in your lime-green lidded FOGO bin along with garden waste.

We started delivering kitchen caddies to all households in March. These contain details of when FOGO collections will begin in your area: your FOGO bin will start being collected weekly and your red-lidded general waste bin will be collected fortnightly (your recycling bin collection remains fortnightly).

Get Ready to FOGO

If you would like to order additional bins or request bin repairs, please complete the survey below. We will assess your needs and order additional bins if they are required.

Our waste educators can also (pending availability) come to your complex to provide an info session for your residents, and materials such as bin stickers. If you have any questions about the new service please get in touch.

From March, food scraps and garden waste should go in the lime-green lid bin, instead of the red lid general waste bin. The red lid general waste bin will be collected fortnightly, and the FOGO bin weekly. The yellow lid recycling bin stays the same - the fortnightly collection and contents won't change. All three bin sizes will stay the same.

Before the start date, residents will receive a small kitchen bin (caddy) for food scraps, and a year's supply of compostable caddy liners.

If you already have a lime-green lidded garden organics bin you will be included in the rollout. This includes houses, villas, businesses, government housing, community groups and sporting clubs.

A successful FOGO system means everyone takes part, including making sure that no plastic, glass or nappies go in the FOGO bin.

Adjusting to FOGO is a change we will adapt to together. The City is committed to supporting residents through education, progress updates, and quickly responding to feedback. Visit our FOGO webpage for more information.

  • What's the background to this project?

We were one of the first local governments to provide three bins 20 years ago. The pro-active adoption of FOGO, well ahead of the State deadline, is part of our commitment to minimise waste going to landfill, remain a leader in waste management, and reduce the effects of climate change at a local level. We are working with the State Government, the WA Waste Authority and the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council (EMRC) on this project.

The State Government's Waste Strategy to 2030 includes significantly reducing waste sent to landfill, and a call for all metropolitan local governments to provide a three-bin FOGO waste service by 2025. FOGO will provide a more circular, less wasteful system from your kitchen or business premises, to our contractors' trucks to the EMRC's processing plant at Red Hill and back to our parks and gardens as compost.
