Why do we need time restrictions?

The Maylands Town Centre is a vibrant destination for the City of Bayswater and wider region, including higher density residential, local employment opportunities and community, arts and hospitality destinations. The management of car parking is an important responsibility of local government in support of balancing the needs of local residents, businesses, as well as patrons of town centre destinations.

Parking time restrictions for Ninth Avenue are in accordance with the Maylands Car Parking Strategy which is an endorsed Strategy of Council and was prepared following extensive community consultation.

Does this plan affect verge parking?

No. Where legally permitted, verge parking will still be permitted under this plan.

Will this just push commuter parking to other areas of Maylands?

Any intervention in parking policy will result in an adjustment period of parking behaviour change. This project follows previous community engagement and recent community feedback, and aims to alleviate the pressure that all-day commuter parking is currently placing on Ninth Avenue.

Parking policy requires ongoing monitoring, and the Maylands Car Parking Strategy proposes further actions within this area of the town centre.

The City recently purchased land on Ninth Avenue for the purpose of creating a new off-street car park. This project is in the design phase and will commence community engagement in the future.

Future Strategy Actions for this area include investigation of time restrictions on George St, Warne St, Rowlands Street and Whatley Crescent. Parking management on these streets is more complex, but is scheduled for investigation following the implementation of ninth Avenue time restrictions. This will be subject to separate consultation with residents.
