Why has the Policy been created?
Currently, child care premises are assessed in accordance with TPS24 and the City's Non-residential Uses in Residential Zones Local Planning Policy. The draft policy has been created to provide child care operators with development standards which are more aligned with the nature of the land use rather than the current broad standards.
Where have the key elements of the policy come from?
The draft policy is aligned with the State Governments release of a draft position statement for child care premises, which was subject to consultation in April 2025. The draft position statement aims to provide a consistent policy approach across local governments. The draft position statement can be found here.
Will this impact existing child care centres?
Existing centres can continue to operate in accordance with their approvals.
Any modifications or additions to existing approvals will be subject to consideration in accordance with the new policy.
